Choosing a boot maker
How to choose the boot maker that
right for your needs!
Choosing a bootmaker depends on what type of boot you have in mind.
Bootmakers are generally known for their different areas of skill, such
as those who excel in their elaborate inlays and others who utilize the
materials in an original manner. Still others may design boots with
strength and endurance designed for working on the ranch.
Bootmakers usually have photos of the types of boots they design, so it
would be beneficial to look at them. (Even better, most bootmakers
nowadays probably have a web page.)
You need to determine the amount of money you are willing to spend. The
time it takes to make the boot, as well as the type of materials that go
into the boot are what determines the price. Ask the bookmaker to
calculate the price of the boots you have in mind. The more exotic
materials such as alligator and ostrich are very expensive and often
only a portion of the hide is used in the boots. Inlays are expensive
because so much time goes into the design then they must be cut, skived
and then the leather is stitched.
As you would probably surmise, more custom bootmakers are found in Texas
than anywhere else, although you can certainly find custom bootmakers in
other areas of the United States, and even around the world. You may
check the internet to find a bootmaker near you.
Although bootmakers can usually send you a measuring kit in the mail,
you may enjoy visiting a bootmaker in person. Then you can be assured of
an accurate fit, look at his creations in person and discover what you
like and don't like about certain boots. You will also be able to look
at the various leather samples and view many examples of the bootmaker's
creations. He may also have photo albums of the custom boots he has made
for his customers over the years.
If you are planning to visit a bookmaker in Texas, check the internet
for various flight specials. Both American Airlines and Southwest
Airlines are based in Dallas, so you may be able to find a cheap air
fare online.
It is important to develop a positive working relationship with your
bootmaker. It is not only the design of your boot, but the working
relationship that will bring you back for your subsequent pairs of
boots. Be prepared to wait for some time for your boots. You need to
decide how long you are willing to wait for your boots. You may only
need to wait three months for your custom boots; on the other hand, some
bootmakers are so busy that you may need to wait over two years for that
custom pair of boots.
Have the bookmaker give you the design and cost, as well as the delivery
date, in writing. You also need to be aware of the recourse you may have
if your are unhappy with your boots. Most bookmakers guarantee their
work.
