Price guide: Vintage and Used Boots

Find out if you're paying the right price for those used boots!

Let's take a look at factory boots first. You will find all kinds of ads for boots from the 1930's (possibly before) up to the present. They will also be found in diverse price ranges. These prices quoted here are merely generalizations. You may discover when you are shopping for vintage factory boots that you will find a real steal; or find that they are way overpriced. You just have to keep your eyes open for the right deal.

Vintage boots are considered factory or custom boots that were made before the 1970's, (sometimes well before the 1970's) and include such brands as Acme, Nocona, Texas and Corral. Most of these boots will have heavy wear and some damage.

Vintage factory boots made from exotic materials, such as alligator, from the 1950's to the 1970's may sell for $100 to $200. However, the alligator skin that is approximately 50 years old may not have held up well, so you may not get much wear out of those types of boots.

Other factory boots made from 1960 to 1980 using exotic leathers include python, lizard and even elephant. Most of the reptile boots, such as alligator, don't hold up well over the long run. These types of used factory boots made during this era, usually sell for around $40 to $100.
Hides such as ostrich, shark and stingray have become more fashionable in recent years. Used boots of these hides made since 1990 generally sell for $100 to $300.

Sometimes only high quality vamps of used boots will be sold. Those which are of high quality alligator, made since 1980, may sell from $100 to $200. These would include such brand names as Justin, as well as international imports. (These would not include the more upscale Lucchese brand.) Resale Lucchese alligator vamps would probably sell for around $200 to $500. Because of their classic style and popularity, Lucchese boots (including vamps alone) during this era have a high resale value.

Factory made alligator boots, in which both the vamps and tops are sold, will usually go for $500 to $1,000 if the hide is in good shape. You may want to consider these types of boots if they are in your size (or even close to it), as your bootmaker would be able to revamp the boots.
